I had just recently updated this post to put the summary and links but didn't think it was necessary to bump.  As far as I was concerned, this whole sad saga was in the past, and the members of the paleo and low carb communities spoke with their actions, for better or worse.  Newbies will find it pinned on the sidebar as the most popular post here ... not exactly sure what that means in the end.  I still can't for the life of me figure out why people continue to promote this guy, but to each their own.    Just they can't say they didn't know ... and Jimmy can't claim to be wrongfully accused ... and I still think the Paleo community could learn a thing or two from the Paula Deen story ... 

But then this past week,  Jimmy Moore is at it again bringing up this issue.  Why I have no idea, because one would think he would rather this faded away into the archives.  But in a really strange turn of events, Joe Salama of The Paleo Movement interviewed Jimmy Moore and Jack Kruse:  Jimmy Moore and Jack Kruse discuss controversy within the Paleo community.

ATP, Thermogenesis and Leptin Man's Electrons

A little update on the adventures of a man we call Leptin Man here at The Asylum, Jack Kruse.  I skimmed his latest (6 page!) manifesto, and near as I can figure, his focus is on ATP stores.  His metabolic pathway du jour is the Pentose Phosphate Pathway (PPP).  Among many many words, he writes:

TRUTH BOMB:  This pathway has only a few major endpoints, but they are all massively important for human life.  It is designed to optimally restore RNA and DNA synthesis by providing maximum recycling of ATP;  and it allows for optimal formation of bio-energenic substrates to make replenish the mitochondria’s ability to increase total adenine nucleotides to re-establish optimal ATP stores from beta oxidation of fats.

Quantum Bullshit

I don't follow Jack Kruse's antics much any more.  Every now and then, however, he comes up in a social media or email note.  He's still at it -- though there is no longer an answer at his practice phone number, so hopefully that means he's no longer actively performing neurosurgery.  From a Krusite on FB:  

Humans are designed to eat an electron dense diet because they have a shortened gut and expanded brain that steepens their energy needs and restricts their sleep needs to 7.5- 8.5 hours. This implies that humans must have evolved around a diet high in electron density from food and their environment.

It is hard to believe Jack has been talking this electron nonsense for going on two years now.  I suppose this is what happens in a community that fails to police itself when it comes to science ... but I digress.

In any case, I have apparently missed the first however many incoherences Jack has created in his EMF series but since he's still on the radar screen, I thought I'd bump this post up.

Folks, all of your food macros contain electrons.  The macros are all converted to acetyl CoA that feeds into Krebs, or they can feed in at various parts along the way and "participate" in the exact same redox reactions in your mitochondria.  The very same.  If there is anyone who has specific questions about Kruse's latest Quantum Bullshit, feel free to ask in comments, but please provide me a Readers' Digest version and/or a short quote.  I simply cannot read this man's blogs.

Being a science geek, I have no clue what the average Joe really thinks when they hear the term "quantum" thrown around.  I imagine that most folks' eyes glaze over other than to think that it must be something really complicated and all that.   And like Entropy dude's blog, one can't possibly be able to understand all those Σ's and such.  I contend that when talking human physiology and metabolism, use of the word quantum is ... well ... an alert that a load of steamin' pre-coprolites is on its way.  

This may not be the most technically accurate definition of what is meant by quantum phenomenon, but it's certainly a workable one for most people.  All atoms have electrons orbiting their nuclei and these electrons can only occupy certain orbits or energy levels.  The closer to the nucleus an electron is, the lower its energy state.  In their "ground state",  electrons will be in the lowest energy level "shells" possible, only occupying a higher level when all lower ones are filled.  Under certain conditions, electrons can be excited and they "jump" up to the next shell.  All good excitement must come to an end, and in short order the electrons fall back down to the energy level from whence they came emitting a photon.    The whole area of quantum mechanics deals with describing these phenomena.  At this level, electrons sometimes behave like particles, and sometimes like waves, and discussions of the wave-particle duality is something used to torture science students through the ages.   But the good news for you and me is that none of this matters to the basics of human metabolism.

Jack the Quack is Back with Smack! But a Calorie is Still a Calorie

Jack who?  Why Dr. Jack Kruse, Neurosurgeon!  (or is he still practicing?) of course.  There's more to say about some of the other fall outs from AHS12, but one that is unrelated to the sociopolitical drama in the community is the apparent re-emergence of Jack Kruse on the paleo web scene.  It began during AHS12 itself via Twitter.  Following Krusegate, having achieved all of his goals of his actions, with the possible exception of that pesky momentary rebuke, Jack retreated to his website and raked in the admission to the webinar on Factor X and various membership and consult fees (all exorbitant, some moreso than others) .

Perhaps the fruits of his recruiting labors on PaleoHacks and Mark's Daily Apple had faded, or perhaps he just missed the limelight.  Having suffered no public rebuke from the organizers of AHS, and absent any official word from Jimmy my-stateroom-was-5-doors-down-from-the-action Moore about what really happened on the cruise ship that got Jack out of his promised free reveal of Factor X and his face on national TV (nobody that was anybody ever challenged his accounts) ... why not?  He's got a new brand of Epi-Paleo and a whole deck of martyr cards to play to rouse his followers and entice new ones.

Fat Head's Fantasy Island

When I was a teenager, I had quite the lucrative babysitting business.  On Saturday nights, before cable and VCR's and DVR's there was Love Boat and Fantasy Island (then SNL and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert <- anyone remember that?).  Given that The Love Boat was aboard a cruise ship, and Fat Head weighs in with a tale that seems more fantasy than reality, I chose to title this post with Fantasy Island.

Maybe Caging the Animal might be more appropriate at times

I'm not sure the wisdom of making this post, but something I read yesterday on Nikoley's latest post on Jack Kruse just didn't sit right with me.  Were it not for the fact that Dick did his best to contribute to the angst of the past going-on two weeks, I probably would just let it slide.  He's just not the sort of blogger I have ever had much interest in.  I can't relate, and, frankly, he's so cryptic at times as to be exasperatingly annoying.  Really, it's almost as frustrating as having a discussion with Fred Hahn, and anyone who ever has ended up getting talked in circles (as opposed to getting talked circles around) by Fred knows what I mean.   

So any way, here was Dick's first post on Kruse.  You see, he had "inside information" having spoken to Kruse on the night of Jan. 9 when Kruse claims to have undertaken his now infamous epic biohack -- complete with elective surgery, MRSA, no local/post op pain management, and 120 lbs of ice.  Here is what Dick wrote then:

I will say it again here clearly for all to hear again. I named no one to anyone publically. The people protecting the people who participated in this crime and did this are saying I did. I challenge anyone to post one blog or media comment where I listed any names I gave anywhere or to anyone publically. There is none and Deans et al. can’t handle that truth. The only person I shared the list of names I gave the FBI was to Robb Wolf and that was for the protection of the ‘movement”. The people who participated in this behavior caused the proximal harm here. It was not the victim or the caller who has already been deposed by my representation. He is no part of this community and just a concerned citizen which further points the gun at the owner of the twitter account. Not everyone knew it was a parody and his deposition shows that now. I shared that information with Richard because there were some rumors I heard of who speculation that caller was and I wanted that cleared up.

If those names got out, then Robb has a problem and not Jack. Everyone got that point clearly now? I would never publicly expose a list of suspects that I was asked to give to the government to explore in this crime. I’m not as stupid as my the people behind this crime.

The more I think about this ...

... the more I wonder, what was Jack Kruse doing going on the LC Cruise?   There was enough notoriety surrounding his TEDx talk, that Jimmy urged on his forum for members to lobby TEDx Nashville to for the speaking slot.  I can't imagine Jimmy Moore didn't watch it.  

So I'm putting myself in his shoes and thinking to myself, this isn't good news here.  I know I'd be a bit panicky if my first two leading headliners backed out relatively late in the game (*see footnote 1) but still in time for would be cruisers to cancel their plans were their heart set on meeting either of these two.  Given the popularity of Jack's podcast appearance and being the #1 vote-getter for Encore Week, of course Jack was the guy to call.  I would have!  Jack was quirky and eccentric at the time, but his bad behavior was limited to PH near as I can tell and nobody would be harmed by a little fun talk about how your leptin receptors can't process electrons from carbohydrates and such.  Score!  With Rosedale & Kruse to replace Gary, and Wheat Belly for Wolf, all seemed well in the LC world.

More on Dr. John "Jack" Kruse

Good Thursday afternoon my fellow inmates ...  Today is May 10th, Day 4 of the LC Cruise.  There have been a number of developments, so I thought I'd share some links and thoughts in one place for those who don't frequent certain blogs and websites and such.

First, I'm safe, sound, and have yet to be contacted by any legal authorities in this matter.  I suspect that if the FBI is even still involved in this case, it is probably to see whether Jack himself was involved in the whole sordid saga and what part one Kevin Cottrell may have to do with it.   I don't know when Cottrell uploaded the unsigned letter from Carnival to Scribd, but the Harkness' posted a slightly different copy of the letter they blogged was received on May 8.   It seems awfully suspect that there would be a PDF of such a file floating around, and I'm no e-doc specialist but Cottrell's letter does not appear to be a scan.  In the properties, the document was created on May 7 at 7:58:52 pm.  I find it suspect that the document has no security, is not digitally signed, or created by anything of an official title, etc.   The Harkness copy appears to be a picture taken of an actual letter that you'll note is signed.  Given that internet on cruise ships is very expensive, so few passengers purchase it, it is highly doubtful any passengers would be officially contacted electronically.  Things not adding up here, though the story is that it was through FB that Jack reached out to a Carnival exec who fixed things by (a) issuing the letter so customers would not hold Carnival responsible for missing one of speakers they paid to see, and (b) made the offer to fly him to Montego Bay.  The different letters are because Carnival shared a draft with Jack (who shared it with Kevin).  I still think this seems fishy, others I've been in contact with feel it's legit ... passing along for the masses ;-)  If it was just a draft, this dastardly duo should have refrained from making that public until the final had been distributed to passengers.  Lots wrong there.

I have a conundrum here. What was done to me will be found in justice. What kind of

was just hit with a torpedo from the “in paleo crowd”. The respected leaders forget to
easily, because Paleo pays their bills. But I promise you the “twat” who opened that
account will be found and prosecuted in the court of law and in the court of public
opinion. To those who fed that ‘twatter’ account……..hire someone now, because
the law says if you fed it……..you own it because of what happened. See
consequences do matter when the federal government resources are wasted. And if
they choose not do deal with it I have plenty of time and money to follow up to see to
it that the rest of this community knows precisely who put our message at risk. When
you came after me you opened the door, my response is called defense.

Sounds like ACTUAL threats to me Dr. (for now) Kruse.

Well the internet is a-buzz.  Jack's sh!t has hit the fan.

I don't know who these reporters are, but even these articles smell super fishy.   

"I know that one of the main ringleaders that's tied to the twitter feed is in New York and they're probably going to be talking to her very soon," Kruse said.

Kruse was told a conviction for this type of crime could carry anywhere from a ten to twenty year sentence.

Let me be perfectly clear.  I WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED.  I've retweeted a few @shitkrusesays tweets because I thought they were funny.  Nothing more, nothing less.  I have NOTHING to do with that account, and not only that, I have no clue who is behind it.  This is more than likely why neither the FBI nor any other law enforcement agency has yet to contact me, let alone show up at my door.  Surely this morning of Tuesday May 8 would have brought all heck down on me were there even one iota of truth to Jack's publicity stunt that supposedly went down two days ago.  

But Angry Dick Nickoley is on it!  Yes, he's all over this case.  From Twitter:

Oooh ... Dick, I'm not afraid of you.  You do realize using the c-word makes you appear to be a very very small ummm ... man.  Right?  Eh, probably not.  I forgot.  Nine years, 3000 posts and a sh!tload more comments than I can ever hope for here and all that.  Yeah, Jack went to the right hack.   Over at Paleo Hacks people are actually accusing me of spreading rumors for posting a link to an official sanction of Kruse by a professional society.  No, I don't know all the facts, but I'm betting the committee that recommended disciplinary action to the board does.  

No doubt the web will be abuzz for a while with conspiracy theories.  Impostors and Terror Plots: Why a Cruise Ship Prank is a Worrying Sign That Paleo is Sunk.  If paleo "sinks" it will be because of the Jacks and Jimmys celebrated by supposed powers that be.  Speaking of ....

Consider this post to be an open letter to Dave Asprey, Kevin Cottrell, and any others who are along for the Kruse to Iceland.  When this dust settles, it won't be the so-called haters left with egg on their faces.  Kevin, think Dan Rather, and Dave?  I dunno, too much coffee perhaps.  Read what's written on my blog, not what's written ABOUT my blogging.  You don't want this going regional or national because it will be a huge pox on all your castles.  You all can't POSSIBLY be this stupid, can you?   And to Jack Kruse?  I'll say this.  If the government comes after me on this, it won't be me you end up taking down.  Get help.  Please.

Kase Klosed?

I've been befuddled for a good long time how Jack Kruse can make the claims he makes yet remains a practicing neurosurgeon in good standing.  Well ... perhaps this sheds some light on goings on:

AANS Neurosurgeon

At its Nov. 18, 2011, meeting, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Board of Directors approved the recommendations of the Professional Conduct Committee that three members be disciplined for unprofessional conduct while appearing as expert witnesses in medical malpractice lawsuits. The disciplinary actions are:

John J. Kruse, MD — Six-month Suspension. The Board concluded that Dr. Kruse gave false testimony in a deposition regarding the size of pedicle screws used in surgery by another neurosurgeon. There were several other matters which, while not the basis for the suspension recommendation, were causes for concern.

Well, this would explain a lot.  "Jack" is John unless anyone even doubts.   This is not a suspension of license to practice, just society membership, but still.  Not sure what "other matters" are.  Interesting the other two refer at least to years when the alleged infraction occurred but not Jack's.  Just passing publicly available info along to my readers...

What if Kimmer was a real 100 lb weight loss success story?

For those not familiar with "Kimmer", allow me to fill in with a little background.  Kimmer was the screen name used by one Heidi Diaz who started a subscription weight loss site KimKins.com.  The website -- version 3.0 -- lives on.  KimKins is essentially several low carb diets that are also low fat and low calorie.  I think the most severe of them is around 300 cal/day.  Kimmer used pictures of others for fake "after" pictures while remaining obese herself and promoting KK as a successful weight loss plan.  You see, here is the before and apparently a real intermediate pic of Kimmer, and her "after" shot.  Below that we have a montage of before/afters used by Heidi.  It always amazed me that folks were apparently unquestioning of these shots, but maybe it's just me that would look at any of them and at least wonder whether this was the same person or not.  Below right is a split screen of Heidi's before picture and the shot taken by a private detective.

Some thoughts on cold exposure

Richard Nickoley/Free the Animal has posted a follow-up post entitled Cold Therapy and Adaptation and Ray Cronise.  Although he comments a few times, this comment addresses Ray's thoughts on it all.  So far I see no need for a warning label on this one ;-)  In any case, Ray presents some excellent information on the topic and I urge my readers to go take a look before diving into the icy water and trying to work up to hours on end in same.  For my part, after reading Ray, I think I may well get an inflatable pool and some pool dumbells and such and put it up in the back yard to exercise in this summer.  There's a town pool here, but if I have to drive somewhere I know compliance suffers, and although I have access to facilities where I work, no student gets to see me in a swimsuit!!

I admittedly don't know much about Ray as, in all honesty, I've only recently heard of him and Wim Hof what with all the recent buzz.  But he sounds knowledgeable and measured.  He has also apparently done extensive self-experimentation with appropriate equipment.  For example he seems to have looked at his body's metabolic rate response to various durations, etc. of cold exposure.  For all the recent hoopla over Kruse's TEDx talk, surgery and MRSA *epic* biohack, we learn from comments (if Lerner could save me the time to link again in comments that'd be great) that he didn't do the usual hormonal panels, etc., and he's not doing the metabolic rate measurements, etc.  We've apparently gotten all the documentation/proof we're ever going to get on that front ... Jack has moved on to using CT to treat patients and made some videos there.

Changing Stories

I thought I'd post here the comments Jack Kruse left here on my blog in response to this post.    I hadn't read much from him at that point, but enough to write his stuff off as quackery.

   I thought I'd come over because my name was used in vain. For the record.....I was surfing for six hours in Orange County before the AHS. Hence the sunburn. People see my pictures constantly on FB. I am white as ghost as an Irish Catholic with freckles usually. I guarrantee you I eat more carbs than Carb sane.......and less protein too. The people who ate with me at AHS were a bit shocked. I do 42 labs on myself every three months in a quantified self program and I adjust my diet to meet my epigenetics switches. I've been doing it five years and I am an open book to my methods. Patients see me constantly and I don't hide behind an internet ambient awareness. I don't dye my hair nor have I had any plastic surgery. I work hard rebuilding my former self with science. My pictures speak for my methods. I don't mind being called out but I would appreciate you checking your facts before you post a falsehood. As a former New Yorker you could at least extend that courtesy. Other than that......thanks for reading my post on AHS and reposting it here. Some of your readers came my way and that is how I knew to come here and formerly introduce myself.
