A big debate I have going on in my head is whether or not the slow, but sure seeping of communism into our society and economy was designed or was just a natural human consequence of switching from a Republic to a democracy. It could be a little of both. Regardless, my hike-inspired thinking had formed a theory of communist plants from the Soviet Union infiltrating our various cultural institutions. In theory I would be able to grab a random "sociology" professor, find out who his professors were, and who their professors were, and who inspired those professors, and inevitably it would all track back to a communist agent back in the 30's and 40's. Also in theory I would be able to prove that all this communism/socialism BS that's been jammed down our throats was indeed a conspiracy set out by an adversary (that has long ago failed and no longer exists), and people would magically wake up and realize we've been duped and dump socialism and communism forever. I'd be hailed a patriotic hero and people would finally listen to the ole Captain.....HA HA HA HA HA!
No, but seriously, I admit my theory is a bit conspiratorial, but not by much and again, this was Hiking-Philosophizing after all. So this is more where I flush out theories rather than pursue them.
Then I read this about the Frankfurt School which kind of confirmed some aspects of my very loose theory, but also provided a missing piece of the puzzle. There were foreign forces at work trying to convert the US to communism. Those forces DID target the soft under belly of the US (media, education, pscyhology, the social science - WHAT DO I TELL YOU ABOUT WORTHLESS DEGREES AND PEOPLE IN THE LIBERAL ARTS???). And those original forces are long dead, but their progeny lives on, conscious or not of what they were programmed to do.
Regardless, it is a good read (the Frankfurt School is about half way down), but something that may provide an additional thread to a theory we're all trying to put together I believe.
